February 15, 1944

Mrs. A.W. Embury 14 Lindsay St. town has received word that her son Pte. Douglas Smith of the Perth Reg't formerly of the Lorne Scotts has been missing in Italy since Jan. 17. Douglas enlisted in May 1642 and spent several months in Terrace B.C. before going over to England in May 1943.
 

February, 1944

The Post learned from Mrs. Embury 14 Lindsay St. N. that her son Pte. Douglas Ward Smith was reported as missing.

Several other newspaper reports stated he had been wounded. These were later contradicted.
 

Mar 3, 1944

Douglas Smith Now Officially Listed Killed

Word has been received by Mrs. Beatrice Smith of town from official sources to the effect that her son Douglas Ward Smith is now presumed to be dead. Douglas was serving with the Central Ontario Regiment and was at first reported missing. The sympathy of his many friends is extended to the family at this sad time.
 


First Reported As Missing—Now Killed in Action

Mrs. Alvin Embury, 14 Lindsay St. N. (formerly Mrs. Beatrice Smith) has received official word that her son, Douglas W. Smith, reported as missing following engagement with the enemy in Italy, has now been officially listed as among the killed. He had been missing since January last.

Pte. Smith, who was 23 years of age, was born in Lindsay, but for 16 years lived with his parents in Ft. Quepelle, Man. Previous to enlisting- with the Lorne Scot's Regiment at Toronto in May '42 he worked with farmers in the Cambray district. He received his training at Brantford, Niagara on the Lake and Terrace, B. C. On reaching overseas he was transferred to the Perth Regiment.

Two other brothers enlisted early in the war, but both have been discharged, one having been discharged in England
 


July 5, 1944

D. W. Smith is Killed In Italy

Word has been received by his mother, Mrs. Embury (nee Mrs. Beatrice Smith,) of the death of Douglas Ward Smith, who was fatally wounded in Italy. On January 17th, 1944, word was received that he was missing in Italy. However he has now been pronounced officially killed in action.
