Harry Bruce Dawkins

Harry Dawkins served in World War 1 following training in Bermuda with the 38th Battalion before heading for the trenches in France. He originally enlisted with the 59th Battalion but was subsequently transferred to the 38th.

While in France he was wounded when a piece of shrapnel apparently bounced off a pair of German made scissors and then lodged in his abdomen. Until his death, if he really liked you he would show you his scar. Whether it was this wound or another, he had a severe wound but returned to the trenches after recuperating.

While serving in France about a year after being severely wounded, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Military Medal. Apparently, Harry and his fellow soldiers were in a machine gun position and Harry held the position which allowed the Allies to advance, gaining several yards. Others had retreated until an officer realized that the position was being held so he advanced. For this action, Harry won military honours.

I believe he was born in Lakefield, Ontario but had moved to Lindsay prior to joining the army. Following the war, he returned to Lindsay where he eventually met and married Nellie Inez Moore in 1921. Harry was an Engineer for the Canadian National Railway until his death in 1950. Harry and Nellie had four children, Dorothy, Gordon, Marjorie and Grenville (Doc).

Gordon Harry Dawkins

Gordon served in World War 2. He enlisted on July 28th, 1943 two weeks after his 18th birthday. At that time, you had to be 19 years old before being sent overseas. As a result, Gordon spent his first year of service with the Demonstration Platoon under Sgt. George "Punch" Imlach. While with the Dem Platoon, he spent time in Kingston, Cornwall, Camp Borden, Long Branch and again in Camp Borden. At some point, he also had a short stint in the United States somewhere near Coney Island.

Finally, in December 1944, Gordon was sent overseas landing in England. He served in Scotland, England, Belgium, Holland, Germany and France. It was late in the war and most servicemen had been there for quite some time and had been through so much. Gordon was sent as a replacement to the Algonquin Regiment.

Many of the stories Gordon told in later years were about the people he met. Fellow soldiers he served with, farmers who traded eggs for chocolate and children who swarmed him in villages for candy. He spoke fondly of the Dutch farmer who let him and his buddies sleep in his hayloft. The first time he had been warm and dry at night for a very long time. He spoke of writing home asking Merleen and his family to send him cigarettes. They didn't. They knew he didn't smoke. But he desperately wanted the cigarettes to trade for fresh food and other luxuries. He also spoke of POWs he met while guarding a hospital. Later he related that they were just like him following orders and wanted to go home too.

Lt. Norman Evoy, Ypres, Belgium.

Sometime during 1915 to 1918, Lt. Evoy had taken cover from a massive artillery barrage in the ruins of St. Martin’s Cathedral in Ypres. After the barrage was over, Lt. Evoy arose from his position only to discover that another soldier had taken cover there as well. When both men looked at each other, Lt. Evoy found himself looking into the eyes of his younger brother, George.
This piece of stained glass was sent back by Lt. Evoy.

Norman Evoy rejoined the Armed Services during WW II and served as an instructor at Camp Borden and at war's end, he retired as Maj. of the Algonquin Regiment.

The awards were for bring their Beaufighter home despite Menaul being badly wounded whilst flying on a anti-shipping sortie on 14 September 1944 with 404 Squadron.

Citation

As pilot and observer respectively, these officers have completed a very large number of sorties and have displayed great skill, courage and co-operation.

In September 1944 they participated in an attack on an enemy shipping convoy off Kristiansand. During the attack the starboard propeller and the pilot's windscreen were damaged by anti-aircraft fire.

Despite this the attack was pressed home.

In the action, Flying Officer Menaul had been hit, a fact unrealized until the turn for home was made. Flying Officer Tomes promptly rendered efficient first aid and afterwards gave valuable assistance to his pilot in his endeavours to reach base.

After bringing his aircraft down safely, Flying Officer Menaul collapsed. He had displayed great courage and fortitude. Flying Officer Tomes also proved himself a valiant member of the aircraft crew, setting a fine example of coolness and determination.

AWARD OF: THE MILITARY MEDAL

TO: B. 78960 PRIVATE EVAN THOMAS RUCK CANADIAN INFANTRY CORPS

During the night of 21/22 February 1944, an important reconnaissance patrol consisting of an Officer and Private Ruck penetrated behind the enemy lines north-east of Crecchio.

After remaining concealed during the night the patrol made an extensive reconnaissance of enemy positions during the daylight. While doing this, the officer stepped on a mine, which exploded, fatally wounding him, the blast throwing Private Ruck ten yards away.

Although stunned and suffering from shock, Private Ruck carried the officer for two hundred yards back through the mine field and dressed his wounds. He then ran three-quarters of a mile uphill to the nearest company, collected a stretcher party and led them back to pick up the officer.

Before being evacuated to hospital, he passed on all information gained. All this action took place within one hundred and fifty yards of known enemy positions and under spasmodic mortar fire.

Private Ruck demonstrated outstanding courage and gallantry throughout in a manner worthy of the highest traditions of the service.
