Rear Admiral Herbert George Burchell RCN
Herbert George Burchell was serving in the Canadian Army and he transferred to the RCNVR in 1940. (He was teaching physics and mathematics at the outbreak of the war and then became one of the first group of twenty RCNVR officers with technical degrees loaned to the RN and trained as radar officers. The initial batch of radar officers sent to serve in British capital ships and cruisers were Canadians, and Canadian radar officers predominated at sea until 1943. (See also Stuart Paddon.)) He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (SB) (Temp.) RCNVR, Radar Officer 1940. He served in H.M.S. Birmingham 1941. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (SB) (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 17/08/1940). He served as Officer-in-Charge Radar School Portsmouth UK 1941. He served in H.M.S. Renown as Radar Officer 1942. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (SB) (Radar) (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 01/01/1943). He served as Fleet Radar Officer on Staff of Flag Officer Eastern Mediterranean and Red Sea 1943, Staff of Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean as Fleet Radar Officer Allied Combined Fleets 1944, Radar Officer on Staff of Commander-in-Chief Canadian Northwest Atlantic 1944. He was appointed as an A/Commander (L) (Temp.) RCNVR (With seniority dated 04/04/1945).
He served in NHQ as Deputy Director Electrical Engineering 1945, (Transferred to RCN). He was appointed as a Commander (L) RCN (With seniority dated 01/01/1947). He served in HMCS Stadacona for RCN Barracks Halifax as Officer-in-Charge Electrical School 1947. He served in HMCS Magnificent 1950. He served as Assistant Superintendent HMC Dockyard Esquimalt 1951. He served as Deputy Superintendent and Coordinator Refit and Repairs West Coast 1951. He was appointed as a Captain (L) RCN (With seniority dated 01/07/1953). He served in NHQ as Assistant Chief of Naval Technical Services 1953. He served as Assistant Chief of Naval Technical Services (Plans) 1953. He was appointed as an A/Commodore (L) RCN 1956. He served in NHQ as Deputy Chief Naval Technical Services 1956. He was appointed as a Commodore (L) RCN (With seniority dated 11/08/1958). He served on HMCS Stadacona as Commodore Superintendent Atlantic Coast and Superintendent HMC Dockyard Halifax 1958. He served in the National Defence College of Canada (Course 15) 1961. He served in NDHQ as Director General Fighting Equipment 1962. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RCN (With seniority dated 01/06/1965). He served in NDHQ as Chief of Technical Services (Logistics) 1965. (He retired on 01/07/1967.)
